Win Some Lose Some with Gear 5 Luffy

Gear 5 Luffy is here from the SH Figuarts Tamashii Nations One Piece action figure line. Luffy’s transformation to Gear 5 was a game changer in the manga by Eiichiro Oda and even more mind blowing in the excellent anime, continues to delight in the egg head arc as we eagerly await the next chapter and pour over 1114 spoilers (I hear there will be another longer beak after, noooo) so the release of a gear 5 figure has been pretty hype.

Even more hype since SH Figuarts is touting the top of the line high tech bendy plastic and arms. The bendy lets and arms are phenomenal, they do work great and they seem like they will last really well, they ooze quality. $90 dollars of quality? Well… we will see. With everything amazing that comes with this devil fruit user there are many steps back.

1) The bizarre leg joints, instead of having legs that connect and articulate in the hip… these connect in the upper thigh.. so his movement and articulation is severely limited. You have to get creative and move the legs in weird ways to get a kick that the raid on onigashima luffy is easily capable of doing. Why would they change this?

2) While the shorts now have a back hinge to allow for movement… there is no knee joint.. so it doesnt really matter, the legs bend so extremely it becomes pointless. Why are they reinventing the wheel?

3) The connections make me nervous, I feel like its only a matter of time until I stress those little pegs while swapping off the arms.

4) They could have glued the awakened cloud, its nice that it pops off so you can manipulate the head and it is secure enough… but it also pops out very easily and can become annoying.

All that aside this figure is incredible and you cant play with it without having a smile on your face, so… in the end it’s totally fun and I am glad I have it I don’t know if it is worth $90 dollars, but it sure is fun and this figure is Joy Boy and will bring joy even to the crustiest heart.

I got mine from Aliexpress, they are now a great resource to get these figures at the time of the Japan release, especially if you miss out on the japanese stores like hobbygenki or hobbylinkjapan or wherever.
