The PowKiddy X55 has been out for quite a while now, but still remains a popular gaming handheld. Recently a couple new colorways were released and rumored to have improved shoulder buttons. I’m not sure if mine has the improved buttons or the original. In this video we’re going to check out all of the primary features of the PowKiddy X55. We’ll test the buttons and the dpad, and explore the settings while also having a little fun testing a few games, including a full port of the awesome 2022 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge!
The people at GoGameGeek did a great job configuring this device with the open source JelOS firmware. Many other sellers leave it to the customer to learn everything about the RetroArch and Emulation Station menus and they send out consoles that could take days or weeks of setting up before you’ll have a real chance to enjoy using them. GoGameGeek also compiles an enormous list of games and organizes them very well. For newcomers this can be a daunting task, but GoGameGeek does all the tedious work for you.
This PowKiddy X55 is one of the first handhelds I’ve ever received that arrived with all my settings just how I like them, preconfigured. It’s like they knew exactly what I wanted without even asking. The games are all scaled correctly, utilizing the best and most appropriate filters for each individual system. Bezel art overlays have been implemented to make for a much more aesthetically pleasing view of the 5.5” 16:9 screen while playing the games with an aspect ratio that take up less screen real estate, so no big black bars at all. Button mapping is preconfigured accurately for each console as well.
All of these settings can be changed to your liking, but for me this console arrived absolutely perfect, with only one exception; no Mario games. Not a big deal however because they can easily be added to the included card, or better yet, the included cards can and should be cloned onto higher quality cards, then the Mario games can be added to the appropriate folders. Every other Nintendo game imaginable seems to be included. You might even want to thin out the number of games to minimize choice paralysis. I don’t think anybody really needs 30,000 games, but I’m not complaining.
After the headaches and issues I’ve experienced from previous handheld purchases on AliExpress, GoGameGeek is like a breath of fresh air. Their website is nice, informative, and easy to navigate. Everything is curated well, just like the game cards they include with their handheld devices. It shows they care, and to me that’s important.
If you value your time and want to have the best experience getting back into retro gaming, GoGameGeek is a great place to start. The extra effort they put into fine tuning these devices allows for you to just turn on the console, find your preferred games, and play them the way you want. You’ll see them how you remember your games looking from the past on a CRT television. It’s amazing to have Sony PlayStation and N64 running perfectly in the palm of your hand.
“Work Less. Play More!” This should be GoGameGeek’s motto, because that’s what they allow us to do with their preconfigured handheld consoles.
Good customer service and fast shipping are hard to come by in the retro handheld gaming industry, but GoGameGeek.com has done well. I strongly recommend visiting GoGameGeek.com if you’re considering buying a new retro handheld device, especially if you’re new to emulation, even if only to browse. It’s a fun website to visit.
Huge thanks to GoGameGeek for providing this awesome device to review on my channel and huge thanks to all my subscribers and viewers who help keep this channel going.
Much love to you all
