Imagine this: the Chinese have developed a small amplifier using the American TPA-three-two-five-five, double chips from Texas Instruments, a reputable American company known for its innovations in Class D amplifiers. Chips delivers one hundred sixty-five watts per channel in stereo mode and three hundred fifty watts for a subwoofer. Together, six hundred eighty watts. Unbeliveble. And it’s really not true. A little bit later I will tell you why.
One chip operates in stereo mode for the speakers, while the other works in mono mode for the subwoofer. These Class D amplifiers are highly energy-efficient, with about ninety percent efficiency, meeting all Hi-Fi criteria. Unbelievably, this tiny amp, weighing less than a kilogram, provides a total of six hundred eighty watts of power.
The trick is in the power supply. With the included power supply you will get totally, approximately one hundred forty to one hundred fifty watts of power. The power shown in the specifications refers to the chip, not the specific amplifier. But still, тhis is a godsend for people like me who have a good subwoofer but whose amplifier has burnt out. Replacing it with a new one, often costs a fortune, but here we have potencial three hundred fifty watts for a subwoofer and one hundred sixty-five watts per channel for stereo speakers for just ninety-nine dollars. For more power you need more powerful power supply. The amplifier itself is well-built with a metal case of sturdy quality. The RCA connectors are of good quality, though not expensive, and the speaker terminals can handle thick, rigid audiophile-grade cables with banana plugs made of gold-plated copper. Even when you plug in three cables—two for stereo and one for the subwoofer—the little amp slightly tilts towards the cables, but you don’t get the feeling that something on the back panel might break or become loose. It even has rubber feet to reduce vibrations, just like high-end devices, painted in a sleek black color.
On the front panel, the power switch feels robust, almost like an aircraft toggle switch. The tone control block, allows you to adjust the volume, bass, and treble, and also has a subwoofer crossover frequency adjustment, which is crucial for subwoofer tuning. The knobs turn with a bit of resistance, giving a sense of reliability and quality—impressive for a ninety-nine dollar device.
You can connect signals to this amp in two ways: Bluetooth and RCA. While the Bluetooth doesn’t support aptX or aptX HD, and lacks a Qualcomm chip, it still delivers decent sound with audible bass, mids, and highs. However, it doesn’t quite meet Hi-Fi standards in my opinion. But when I connected a simple CD player via the RCA inputs, the sound was truly Hi-Fi. I played various music on it, and it sounded fantastic with the Sonus Faber Lumina two and ten inch, closet box, passive subwoofer.
When I first received this amplifier, I wondered if such a small device could drive my large, tight subwoofer with its rock-solid ten inch diaphragm. Surprisingly, it powered the subwoofer effortlessly, delivering incredible sound. The only feature I missed, was phase adjustment, which is crucial for aligning the subwoofer with the speakers. Though the amp lacks a phase control, you can adjust the subwoofer’s position slightly to align the phase manually, ensuring synchronized sound between the subwoofer and speakers.
Interestingly, you can use this amplifier with just speakers, without necessarily connecting a subwoofer. The left and right outputs cover the entire frequency range from the lowest to the highest. Even without a subwoofer, it provides powerful, robust sound. But when you connect a subwoofer to its designated output, the system delivers such a massive impact that you could easily host a party.
